Back to School

As summer winds down, back to school brings the return of lunches, snacks, and... more snacks!

This edition of 2 Truths and a Lie is focused on kids returning to school. But remember, this applies to adults too!

Guess the lie:

  1. A whole grain wrap with peanut butter and banana provides a balance of the Power 3 formula (protein, fat and complex carbohydrates).

  2. If a kid's lunch is missing a protein/healthy fat element, their blood sugar will crash much faster after eating.

  3. Kids need at least two different sources of protein in every lunchbox to maintain focus through the afternoon.

Statement 3 is the LIE! ❌

Kids don't need multiple protein sources in one lunch. A single source with a complex carbohydrate and fiber is plenty to keep their energy steady throughout the day.

A whole grain wrap combined with a nut/seed butter and banana hits is a great blend of complex carbohydrate with protein, fat and fiber in one easy to prepare meal.

Protein and healthy fats are an anchor for our sugar levels. They help slow down digestion creating more of a steady stream of glucose into the bloodstream rather than a sharp spike then crash.

Remember, let your kids help! 🥪✨

Giving kids autonomy to choose from a few healthy options empowers them to build balanced habits. For the younger kids, keep it simple (carrots or apple slices?). For the older kids, let them start spreading nut butters on bread. Be sure to do this when you have time and patience (such as the night before) so the added clean up is not stressful.

Most of all, enjoy the experience! Play a favorite playlist, map out the menu and turn lunch prep into a positive evening routine.
